Autism Causes & Risk Factors

Other Risk Factors

Apart from these causes mentioned above, there are some other risk factors for autism. Firstly, gender matters as males tend to be more likely to develop autism than females. Another factor is the age of the parents. Those babies who are born to older parents would be at higher risk. Being born at a low weight would affect the normal development of the children, including brain activities. This would eventually make them more vulnerable to autism later in life. When it comes to ethnicity, the risk is highest in white groups living in major metropolitan regions. They tend to be exposed to a lot of harmful components in the air, which would affect the brain activities and lead to the symptoms of autism. While some of these risk factors are unavoidable, many of them can be prevented easily with some lifestyle changes. [7]
