Aneurysm – Types & Causes

Types of Aneurysm

Depending on the location of an aneurysm in the body, the disease can be categorized into different types. Below are the most common forms of aneurysm:

Cerebral Aneurysm

Cerebral aneurysm affects the arteries that are responsible for pumping blood to the brain. If an aneurysm in the brain becomes ruptured, it may be dangerous or even fatal in the first 1 day. In fact, 4 out of 10 cases are fatal, while the others who survive may have a neurological disability or impairment. Cerebral aneurysm is the most prevalent cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage, a form of stroke. [4]

Aortic Aneurysm

This form of aneurysm affects the aorta, which is the large artery starting at the heart’s left ventricle and passing through the abdominal cavities and chest. There are two common types of aortic aneurysm: abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). AAA is more common and occurs in the part where aorta passes through the abdomen. This form may become fatal rather quickly, but surgery and hospital care would increase the survival rate significantly. TAA is less prevalent and happens in the part where aorta passes through the chest.  [5]
