Causes of Metabolic Disease
Metabolic syndrome has a close association with inactivity, obesity, and overweight. In addition, it is related to insulin resistance. In healthy adults, the digestive system breaks down ingested foods into sugar. The pancreas releases a hormone called insulin to aid sugar in entering body cells and serving as a fuel. When insulin resistance occurs, body cells do not respond to glucose and insulin, which leads to high levels of blood sugar. [3]
Risk Factors of Metabolic Disease
Some risk factors may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. These include:
– Ethnicity: People of Hispanic descendants tend to be at a higher risk, particularly Hispanic females
– Age: The risk tends to increase with age
– Diabetes: A special type of diabetes called gestational diabetes could increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. It occurs when pregnant women have diabetes
– Obesity: There is a link between metabolic syndrome and obesity due to pressure on the abdomen
– Medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, polycystic ovary syndrome, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [4]
