Rotator Cuff Tear

The most popular cause and familiar spot for injuries is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a class of muscles and tendons that assist the shoulder and hold the joint in place. The rotator cuff tears are made up of 4 muscles which are the: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor. A rotator cuff tendon can tear from a single event, like falling on an outstretched arm. Most of the time, it is the rotator cuff tendons (the thick band of tissue that connect the muscles to the bones) that tear, but sometimes the tear occurs in the muscle.

Rotator cuff tendon might also result from a sudden injury or slow, degenerative change. Symptoms include shoulder weakness and pain, as well as popping sensation during arm movement. Severe injuries can cause several of the tendons and muscles to tear. For example, a teacher who often uses his or her arms overhead can develop a rotator cuff tear.
