Verapamil for Migraine Prevention – Facts to Know

2How Verapamil Works

Verapamil work like other calcium channel blockers. They keep calcium from coming in smooth muscles, thus relaxing large blood vessels in the body. This prevents blood vessels from narrowing and helps reduce blood pressure. This effect is believed to help prevent migraines. However, keep in mind that the FDA does not approve verapamil for this purpose. Some studies have also shown that calcium channels may not work normally in the nervous system in people with migraine. Some scientists think that there is still insufficient data to refuse or support the use of verapamil for preventing migraines. [3]
