Tips for How to Get More REM Sleep

Create a Suitable Space for Sleep

An ideal space for sleep should be quiet, cool, and dark. Therefore, consider using heavy shades or curtains to prevent sunlight from outside or artificial light from other rooms. Also, cover your computers, televisions, or any other electronic displays to keep the light from glowing. If necessary, cover your eyes with a sleep mask to sleep better. Install an air-conditioner if you live in a hot region. For loud noises, either from your partner or the outside, you may try earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. [2]

Turn off Electronic Devices

The screen of electronic devices may emit blue light, which would disrupt the body’s internal clock and stimulate the brain. These effects make it difficult to fall asleep and sleep well. More importantly, the blue light would inhibit the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps with REM sleep. For these reasons, make sure to turn off any electronic devices before bedtimes, such as computers, monitors, tablets, smartphones, laptops, and televisions. [3]
