What to Expect After J-Pouch Surgery
After J-pouch surgery, you may have to spend a few days in the hospital to recover and learn how to take care of the temporary ileostomy. During this period, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or pain medications. In addition, you should drink a lot of fluids, especially electrolyte drinks or water, to prevent loss of electrolytes and dehydration. In the next few weeks, avoid eating some foods, such as popcorn, nuts, seeds, as well as raw veggies and fruits. These products contain roughage, which may cause irritation in the anal area. If you notice watery stools, it is advisable to eat peanut butter, rice, bananas, or applesauce. During recovery, you should also avoid strenuous activities. [10]
