The lateral rectus muscle
Inserted into the anterior, lateral surface of the eyes with a 6.9 mm distance from the limbus, the strap-shaped lateral rectus muscle is in charge of abducting the eyeballs and directing the gaze laterally on the horizontal plane. The gaze movement from left to right requires the joint action of two rectus muscles when the lateral rectus muscle contracts and pulls the eyeball to the canthus direction, while the medial rectus muscle should maintain relaxation.
