Does Sugar Cause Inflammation? Side Effects and More

Effects of Sugar on the Body

Studies have shown that a diet high in sugar may result in low-grade, chronic inflammation. This may be attributed to some changes happening in the body:

– Increased gut permeability: Undigested food, toxins, and bacteria may move out of your gut more easily and penetrate the bloodstream, which possibly results in inflammation.

– Excess release of advanced hydration end products (AGEs): These are harmful components that form when fat and protein combine with sugar in your bloodstream. This may result in inflammation and oxidative stress.

– Weight gain: Consuming too much refined carbs and added sugar would increase the risk of weight gain. It has been shown that excess fat in the body may be linked to inflammation.

– Higher LDL or bad cholesterol, which is linked to higher CPR levels, a marker of inflammation.

Keep in mind that other factors may also contribute to inflammatory effects in the body. These include excess fat intake, smoking, medications, and stress. [2]
