Safety of Nipple Stimulation for Labor Induction
It is generally safe to perform nipple stimulation to induce labor in a healthy, full-term pregnancy. Nevertheless, there would be a potential risk of developing uterine hyper stimulation. This means contractions may come too close together and lead to fetal distress. Although the risk is quite low with nipple stimulation and more common in medical inductions, it is better to do this procedure with close supervision of your doctor. Before starting, ensure that:
– The babies are head down
– You do not experience any existing diseases that may pose risks to natural induction
– You are at least 39 weeks of pregnancy
– You have consulted your doctor
– You do not experience any complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or pre-eclampsia [7]
