Can Nipple Stimulation Induce Labor?

Nipple stimulation causes the body to release oxytocin, a hormone with some effects. Firstly, it is important for sexual arousal. The hormone is typically produced when women nurse their babies, which establishes bonding between them. More importantly, oxytocin is necessary for the contractions of the uterine during delivery and labor. After these phases, it is still important for continued contractions to ensure the uterus can return to the normal shape and size. For these reasons, nipple stimulation has been shown to be an effective method to induce labor. In fact, scientists have created Pitocin, a synthetic form of oxytocin, to provide the same benefits.
