Types of Atypical Parkinsonism
There are different forms of atypical Parkinsonism, including:
– Progressive supranuclear palsy: This is the most common type of atypical Parkinsonism. It mostly affects people over 60 years old.
– Dementia with Lewy bodies: This form leads to visual hallucinations and early dementia, especially in men over 50 years old.
– Corticobasal degeneration: This type results in movement problems, jerking muscles, and stiffness in the extremities.
– Multiple system atrophy: It causes sexual dysfunction, bowel or bladder problems, skin discoloration, and unsteady blood pressure.
– Vascular Parkinsonism: It is typically caused by vessel problems in the brain areas that are responsible for controlling movement. Minor strokes are the most common cause.
– Normal pressure hydrocephalus: This form occurs when the cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the skull and increases pressure on the brain. It mostly affects people over 65 years old. [3]
