Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is an umbrella term for lung conditions, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is characterized by coughing and blood in the sputum or throat. Other typical symptoms include wheezing, frequent respiratory infections, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. COPD typically occurs due to long-term exposure to particulate matter or irritating gases, which causes chronic inflammation in the lungs. Those with COPD may be at a higher risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and other conditions. Since it is a progressive disease, COPD may become worse over time.
