What Are the Types and Levels of Autism?

Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

When your children have symptoms of autism but do not fit any type above, they may be diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified or PDD-NOS, also known as atypical autism. Main features of this form include:

– Impairment after the age of 3: Those who are younger than 3 years old do not qualify for a diagnosis of this type

– Certain atypical behaviors: They would not show any symptoms of autism or they would show some symptoms that are not typically linked to autism

– Certain unusual behaviors: They would have troubles linked to certain symptoms of autism

In general, many individuals with PDD-NOS require support and therapy to live and work independently [5]
