Early-Onset Parkinson’s Disease

Also called youth-onset Parkinson’s disease, early-onset Parkinson’s disease is a rare form that only occurs in people from 21 to 50 years old. Symptoms are quite similar to those of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. However, this type is likely to progress more slowly. Most people are diagnosed when they are in the prime, so the condition would severely disrupt their daily lives. A distinctive characteristic of early-onset Parkinson’s disease is the earlier onset of side effects associated with levodopa. To delay them, people with this type are typically treated first with levodopa alternatives, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors or dopamine agonists. [4]
