Transverse Myelitis Fact Sheet

Typical Symptoms of Transverse Myelitis

There are 4 typical symptoms of transverse myelitis. These include:

– Pain: People with this condition usually experience low back pain, which would progress into shooting and sharp sensations around their torso and legs.

– Bladder or/and bowel dysfunction: Other common signs are the increased urge or frequency to urinate, issues with voiding, constipation, and incontinence or loss of bladder control.

– Sensory changes: Transverse myelitis would result in paresthesia, which is characterized by coldness, burning, tingling, numbness, pricking, and burning in the genital area, torso, legs, and arms. Bending forward might cause shooting pains as well.

– Leg and arm weakness: This symptom occurs and progresses very quickly. When inflammation occurs in the upper area of the spinal cord, hand weakness might occur. Some people might even develop partial leg paralysis, which subsequently progresses to complete paralysis if left untreated. [4]
