Tourette’s Syndrome Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Environmental Factors

Some environmental factors during the prenatal periods, postnatal life, and perinatal stages, might contribute to the development of Tourette’s syndrome. These would include smoking, stressors, pollution, and infections. Those factors are associated with alteration of brain neurochemicals, including dopamine and serotonin. Many studies have shown that Tourette’s syndrome might be partially the direct result of abnormalities in communicating those neurochemicals. In addition, exposures to environmental components can also lead to abnormalities in your basal ganglia, which might cause Tourette’s syndrome. [2]
