Masked Faces in Parkinson Disease

Overview of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a medical condition that affects the central nervous system. It is characterized by problems with coordination, balance, and movement. The disorder happens when neurotransmitters in the brain, such as norepinephrine and dopamine, are damaged. As a result, it lacks chemical messengers to transmit information, which leads to impaired functions in the cognitive system. Most people develop early symptoms at around the age of 60 years old. Around 5 to 10 percent of reported cases have earlier onset, at the age of 50 years old. Symptoms tend to start slowly and become worse gradually. When the condition progresses, people would have difficulties with daily tasks, such as walking or talking. [1]
