Causes of Muscle Twitches and Spasms

Muscle twitches and spasms occur when nerves misfire. This leads to the sudden contraction of muscle fibers, which can be very painful. These problems can happen with any muscle groups in the body, but they mostly affect the foot and calf muscles. Other muscles that are prone to cramping or twitching include abdominal, rub, hands, arms, hamstrings, and thigh. Read on to learn more about the common causes of muscle twitches and spasms.

1Dehydration

Water and other fluids play an important role in many body functions. They can be lost through vomiting, urination, and sweating. Without sufficient intake of water, this would lead to dehydration, which can affect the whole body, from the cellular to the external level. When the body is dehydrated, the amount of blood to the working muscles is lowered. As a result, normal functions of these parts like relaxing and contraction would be affected. That’s why dehydration can be a cause of muscle twitches and spasms. It is quite common to notice these symptoms around the eyes. Ideally, a typical adult should drink at least 2 liters of water on a daily basis. Physically active people should consume more than that amount. [1]
