Psoriatic Arthritis – Causes, Triggers, Risk Factors and Prevention

Risk Factors for Psoriatic Arthritis

Family History or Having Psoriasis

Since some genetic factors may make you more prone to psoriatic arthritis, the disease may run in families. It is actually estimated that from 30 to 50 percent of people with this disease have at least one member in the family who has either psoriatic arthritis or psoriasis. Therefore, if your sibling or parent has one of these conditions, you would be at a higher risk of developing them in the future. [5]

Psoriasis is a condition that leads to itchy, scaly, and red skin spots. These signs typically affect the scalp, trunk, elbows, and knees. There is currently no cure for this chronic disease. If you have psoriasis, the risk of developing psoriatic arthritis is also higher. It is estimated that approximately 30 percent of people with psoriasis have psoriatic arthritis as well. Nevertheless, in around 17 percent of individuals with psoriatic arthritis, arthritis symptoms tend to occur before the skin problems of psoriasis. [6]
