Pneumonia – Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

The Symptoms of Pneumonia

People have often mistaken pneumonia for influenza because their symptoms are pretty alike. These symptoms include:

  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • High fever
  • Heavy sweating
  • Shaking chills
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Extreme fatigue

Though pneumonia and influenza have similarities in symptoms, they are not the same. Flu comes on suddenly and disappears quickly. Symptoms often appear two days after infection and clear up in around one week. Pneumonia symptoms manifest slower. Since it is a lung infection, pneumonia has more upper respiratory-related or lung-related symptoms like:

  • Cough out greenish, yellow, or bloody mucus
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Bluish fingernails and lips
  • Chest pain
  • Decreased appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea [4]
