MS Relapses: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Causes of MS Relapses

A MS relapse occurs when there is problem in the brain-blood barrier. As a result, cells in the immune system may attack the spinal cord and brain. This leads to inflammation that causes damages to a protein-rich sheath called myelin, which protects important neurons that play key role in many body functions and the ability to move, feel, and think clearly. During a MS relapse, lesions may form in the optic nerves, spinal cord, or brain. Depending on the affected parts and the degree of the damage, symptoms can vary from person to person. [7]
