Radiation therapy kills cancer cells by using high-powered energy beams generated from protons or X-rays. Patients need to lie on a table with a machine moving around to direct radiation to specific body points. This procedure can be used either before or after surgery. Most doctors combine it with chemotherapy to improve effectiveness. When surgery is not an option, this combination can be the main treatment. In advanced cases when the tumor spreads to other body parts, radiation can help alleviate pain.[6]
