For individuals with HIV and those with a weakened immune system, an opportunistic disease like linear gingival erythema is typically considered a severe complication. If left untreated, the condition would spread to the entire throat or develop into more serious oral infections, such as necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis. This is a severe problem and may progress quickly in only a couple of months. This oral infection may lead to severe mouth smell, bleeding, severe pain, as well as tooth and bone loss. [11]
