Risk Factors for Leukemia

Certain factors would increase the risk of leukemia. These include:

– Smoking: Tobacco products would make you more prone to acute myelogenous leukemia.

– Exposure to chemicals, especially benzene in gasoline, may increase the risk of some forms of leukemia.

– Genetic conditions, such as Down syndrome, has been shown to increase risk of leukemia.

– Cancer treatments: Those who have had some forms of radiation therapy and chemotherapy for cancer may be at risk.

– Family history: The risk may be higher if you have a family member with this condition.

Keep in mind that many people with these risk factors do not have leukemia, and many people with leukemia do not have these risk factors. [5]
