Knee Bursitis – What You Need to Know

Invasive Treatments

In more serious cases of knee bursitis, some invasive treatments can be suggested. The doctor may inject a corticosteroid into the affected area to alleviate inflammation. This option is used when your condition does not respond to basic treatments and lasts persistently. Pain and inflammation tend to subside quickly, but you would feel uncomfortable in a few days. Another option is to aspirate a bursa with a needle to reduce inflammation and excess fluid. This would trigger temporary swelling and pain, which requires an immobilizer to reduce the risk of recurrence. Lastly, surgery is needed in severe cases. The doctor might need to remove the bursa to prevent it from worsening. [7]
