R.I.C.E. Protocol
Like many other injuries, the R.I.C.E protocol is a safe treatment option for IT band syndrome. It can play a key role in the initial and immediate care of pain caused by the condition. R.I.C.E stands for:
– Reduced activity or rest: The first thing is to rest your affected leg so that it can have enough time to heal.
– Ice: Apply ice packs or bags of frozen veggies on the affected area can help alleviate inflammation and relieve pain. You should do this for around 15 minutes every 2 hours.
– Compression: The doctor might suggest wearing a compression pad or bandage above the knee. This helps stabilize your knee and minimize friction, which is caused when your iliotibial band slides over your lateral epicondyle.
– Elevation: People with IT band syndrome should elevate their legs above the heart to help with healing. [7]
