Diagnosis of Gastroparesis
To diagnose gastroparesis, a doctor will start with asking some questions about medical history and doing a physical exam. Some other tests can be performed to rule out the possible causes. These include:
– Blood tests: to look for signs of diabetes and other associated conditions
– Ultrasound: This technique creates a picture of internal organs with sound waves. It can help rule out gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, and liver disease
– Upper endoscopy: This procedure involves inserting a thin, long scope into the stomach through the esophagus. It can check for possible blockages in your stomach
After ruling out possible causes of noticed symptoms, a doctor will do other tests to see how the stomach empties. These include carbon breath test, SmartPill, or gastric emptying scintigraphy test. [5]
