Diagnosis and Common Treatments for Shingles

Serologic Methods

Serologic methods can be alternative to the PCR test when you notice an unusual rash or when there are not any swabs to take a sample. It works by examining antibodies in the blood to confirm results from a physical exam. Serological could determine 2 forms of antibodies generated by the body when exposed to the virus: IgG and IgM. If results show both antibodies, it may indicate that you have shingles. In people with a weakened immune system, the test may give fault results as their body cannot generate enough antibodies. Even with a positive result, it is important to assess other physical signs to make a precise diagnosis. [3]
