Diagnosis and Common Treatments for Shingles

PCR Test

PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction. This lab test can be used for different purposes, including identifying the DNA of the virus causing shingles. The technique uses swabs from the shingles scabs or blisters and then copies the DNA for easier detection. The whole process is almost automated and quite quick. Results are often available within 1 day. In addition to identifying the virus, this test could help spit whether the rash is triggered by a vaccine strain or wild varicella. [2]
