Common Causes & Risk Factors of Bursitis

Infection

Another possible cause of bursitis is an infection in your bursae. The viruses or bacteria would attack the surface or outer parts of this area and lead to inflammation. In most cases, a cut or wound around the skin can be a good opportunity for these foreign invaders to penetrate and cause the condition. Keep in mind that most healthy people will not be affected by the penetration of bacteria through their skin. However, those patients with HIV/AIDS or those who are undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy to treat cancer would be at higher risks due to compromised immune systems. The same goes for heavy smokers and alcohol drinkers. [4]
