Causes of Depression

Hormone Fluctuation

Depression is more common in women than in men. Studies have shown that it is associated with certain changes in hormone levels, especially during the reproductive years. Symptoms tend to appear when hormones in women fluctuate. These include periods around their pregnancy, menstrual period, perimenopause, and childbirth. A special form called postpartum depression happens immediately after delivery, which is caused by quick hormonal changes. In general, the risk of depression in women decreases when they go through menopause.[3]
