Causes of a Prolapsed Uterus
In general, a prolapsed uterus occurs when the supportive tissues and pelvic muscles become weak. Typical causes include pregnancy, obesity, being overweight, delivery of large babies, trauma during childbirth, difficult delivery and labor, repetitive heavy lifting, chronic bronchitis or cough, straining with bowel movement, chronic constipation, and low levels of estrogen after menopause. [4]
Risk Factors
The risk of developing a prolapsed uterus tends to increase when people become aged and the levels of estrogen in the body drop. Estrogen is an important hormone that plays a key role in the strength of the pelvic muscles. During childbirth or pregnancy, any damage to pelvic tissues or muscles might result in prolapse. The highest risk can be in those women who are postmenopausal or have had more than vaginal birth. Also, any physical activity that places pressure on your pelvis can also make you more prone. Other risk factors include chronic constipation, chronic cough, or obesity. [5]
