Does HPV Vaccine Work?
Studies have shown that the HPV vaccine can be effective in protecting some HPV strains that may cause genital warts or cancer. More specifically, it can protect against:
– HPV type 6 and type 11, lead to 90 percent of genital warts cases.
– HPV type 16 and type 18, lead to 80 percent of cervical cancer cases.
– 5 types of HPV that may cause other forms of cancer in the throat, penis, vagina, anus, and cervix.
The HPV vaccine should be taken in a series of separate shots over a period of 6 months. For younger people between 9 and 14 years old, only 2 shots are needed. [7]
