Blood Clot in Leg Treatment & Causes

Antiplatelet Medications

Antiplatelet medications work by reducing the stickiness of platelets, which are the small elements in the blood that form a blood clot. By preventing platelets from clumping together, these drugs can inhibit the process of blood clotting. Three common types of antiplatelet medications include:

– Adenosine diphosphate receptor inhibitors: Often used when there is a high risk of arterial clotting.

– Dipyridamole: Although they do not affect the stickiness of platelets much, these medications may reduce adverse effects related to bleeding.

– IIb/IIIa inhibitors: They are the most powerful form of platelet inhibitors. These medications are often used to prevent clotting after interventional procedures. [6]
