Autism Symptoms in Adults

Sensory Issues

Sensory integration disorder or sensory processing disorder is a common health issue in autistic adults. It causes the brain to be not sensitive enough or too sensitive to specific sensory inputs. In other words, their senses can be either dulled or amplified. For sight, they can be overwhelmed by fast-moving vehicles or colorful objects. For hearing, they tend to avoid loud sounds by covering their ears in crowded areas. For smell, people with autism can be disturbed by trivial scents or love strong aromas. For taste, they can have special interests in spicy foods or bland foods. For touch, they can feel bothered by clothes tags or fabrics. [2]
