9 Common Causes of Appendicitis

Tumors or Enlarged Lymphoid Follicles

Appendicitis may be caused by a tumor in the appendix. However, this is extremely rare. There are a few forms of tumors that may grow in the appendix. These include neuroendocrine tumors, colonic-type adenocarcinoma, appendiceal mucoceles, goblet cell carcinomas, signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma, and paraganglioma. Whether the tumors are benign or malicious, it is important to get diagnosed early and proper treatment options. In many cases, surgery might be needed to remove the tumor and prevent further complications. [2]

Enlarged lymphoid follicles are a common form of reactive lymphoid proliferation. Appendicitis may develop as a result of this condition. It is more common in adolescents and children, but people of all age groups can be affected. The exact cause is usually unclear. Nevertheless, a few conditions characterized by enlarged lymphoid follicles have some extra morphologic features that require lab tests to confirm. [3]
