Urinary Reconstruction

Once your bladder is removed in surgery, the doctors must find a new place in your body to store urine. In general, there are three urinary reconstruction options to choose from:

– A neobladder or new bladder could be created from a part of your intestines. This can be connected to your urethra so that you could urinate as usual.
– A pouch could be created in your body with tissues from the intestines or stomach. One end will be connected to your ureters via an opening on the stoma or abdominal wall.
– A part of the intestines could also be connected to your ureters. In this option, urine will flow from the kidney to the ureter into the stoma and drip into a collection bag outside your body. [3]
