4 Types of Heart Failure

Right-Sided Heart Failure

Right-sided heart failure is usually triggered by pulmonale or pulmonary heart disease, which is basically caused by several conditions like pulmonic stenosis or pulmonary hypertension. A physical exam would diagnose the condition thanks to a few typical symptoms, such as the enlarged spleen, enlarged liver, ascites, or edema. Due to the accumulation of blood in the right part of your heart, you might also suffer congestion of the systemic capillaries. This eventually leads to excess buildup of fluids in the body and causes edema. People with edema tend to have swelling in the skin, especially around the ankle and foot. Frequent urination at nighttime or nocturia might also happen as fluids are returned from the legs to the bloodstream when you are sleeping at night. In more severe cases, the liver would be seriously affected and enlarged. Without proper treatments, it might lead to impaired liver functions and jaundice. [2]
