Ulcerative Colitis Diet Plan: Best & Worst Food

Refined Grain

Refined grains such as barley, cornmeal, oats, rice, and wheat are a great source of fiber. They are typically used to make breakfast cereal, oatmeal, pasta, or bread. Make sure to eat refined rather than whole grain. The difference is that refined grains are removed the germ and bran, thus allowing for a finer texture. This makes it easier for people with ulcerative colitis to digest, especially during a flare. Also, most refined grains are high in iron and vitamin B, which are necessary for the body to fight against inflammation. The recommended amount is just several grams each week. [5]
