Lorazepam – Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

1What Is Lorazepam?

Lorazepam, also known as the brand named Ativan, is a medication in the medicinal group called benzodiazepines. Doctors often prescribe it for treating sleeping issues and anxiety. The drug comes as a liquid and tablets, which are only available on prescription. In some cases, lorazepam can be injected in medical settings. The effects of this medication start to appear around 30 minutes and may last up to 8 hours. Since lorazepam would cause drowsiness, avoid working or driving after taking the drug. In addition, it should only be taken for a short-term treatment to avoid further complications. [1]

How Lorazepam Works

Like other benzodiazepines, lorazepam works by increasing the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called GABA. This component plays a key role in sending message between different parts of the body. By boosting the activity of GABA, it leads to a tranquilizing and sedating effect that can help improve symptoms of anxiety and stress. Lorazepam has an intermediate to rapid onset of action. You often feel the effects after around 20 minutes. However, the peak effect happens within 2 to 3 hours after taking the medication. [2]
