Lorazepam – Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Lorazepam Uses

Lorazepam is often prescribed by doctors for immediate relief or short-term treatment of anxiety in children older than 12 years old and adults. It can also help with anxiety linked to depression or anxiety-associated insomnia. However, you should not take lorazepam for more than 4 weeks as it would increase the risk of addiction, misuse, or abuse. In medical settings, the medication can be injected to treat potentially dangerous seizures. In these cases, it is often injected intravenously through a vein. This application is approved as a sedative before surgery and general anesthesia as well. [3]

Off-Label Uses of Lorazepam

In addition to the main use in treating anxiety, lorazepam can be sometimes prescribed for off-label uses. For instance, the medication can help manage symptoms of alcohol withdrawal or reduce the risk of withdrawal complications. Another use of lorazepam is to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, including agitation. It can also be effective in alleviating vomiting and nausea during chemotherapy. During a surgical procedure, lorazepam can help improve sleep quality, boost relaxation, as well as reduce agitation. In more serious circumstances, lorazepam can be injected intravenously to help you tolerate a bedside procedure or a ventilator. [4]
