Ileoanal Anastomosis (J-pouch) Surgery

Possible Risks of J-Pouch Surgery

There are several risks with J-pouch surgery. Common problems include pouch failure, diarrhea, dehydration, ileostomy blockage, narrowing of the space between the anus and the pouch, and pouchitis. Among these, pouchitis is a common complication. It occurs when the internal pouch is infected after the surgery. The risk tends to be higher when the J pouch remains in place for a longer period. This infection would lead to signs similar to those in ulcerative colitis, such as dehydration, fever, joint and abdominal pain, as well as diarrhea. [12]
