Other Tests for IBS and Differential Diagnoses
Other common tests for IBS diagnosis include:
– Colonoscopy: This procedure examines the whole colon with a small, flexible tube
– A breath test to determine bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
– A stool test to look for signs of parasites or bacteria, as well as to examine liquid released by the liver
– CT scan or X-ray to produce pictures of the pelvis and abdomen, which allow a healthcare provider to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms. These imaging techniques are especially helpful when you experience abdominal pain [7]
Many common digestive issues may have similar symptoms as IBS. These include food intolerances and celiac disease (an autoimmune problem when consuming gluten-containing food). At the same time, colon cancer and IBD, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, may share several signs as well. The main difference is that patients with these conditions might have rectal bleeding or other warning signs many times, in addition to constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, or abdominal pain. IBS often does not cause rectal bleeding unless it is caused by hemorrhoids. [8]
