IBS Tests and Diagnosis

Lactose Intolerance Tests

Lactase is a type of enzyme that helps the body digests sugar in many dairy products. If there is not enough lactase, it may lead to lactose intolerance. This condition would cause many symptoms similar to those of IBS. These include abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, gas, cramps, and nausea. In people with lactose intolerance, symptoms tend to occur 30 to 120 minutes after consuming dairy products and become worse when the amount of these products is increased. A doctor may do several lactose intolerance tests to rule out this possible cause. The most common option is a breath test. Another way is to eliminate dairy products from the diet to see whether you still experience these symptoms. [6]
