How to Read an Audiogram

Audiogram Symbols for Right and Left Ears

Most hearing tests use headphones and produce a graph with two results, each one for each ear. The left ear is represented by the letter X. However, some companies may also use a square. The right ear is represented by a triangle or circle. The exact symbol may depend on the clinic where you do the test. These symbols should be located on one of the plotted lines in the graph. The line and symbol for the left ear and right ear should be in blue and red, respectively. If you did not wear headphones during the test and instead hear from a speaker, you would notice the letter S. [3]

Audiogram Symbols for Bone Conduction Testing

If your doctor conducts bone conduction testing, an audiogram may use different symbols. The > arrow represents the left ear, while the < arrow depicts the right ear. Some clinics may use other symbols, with the] for the left ear and [for the right ear. The results of bone conduction testing may help determine the cause of hearing loss, such as a blockage by earwax or damaged nerves. In fact, most audiograms do not have these symbols. [4]
