The Role of Monocytes in Innate Immunity
Innate immunity is the immunity we are born with. It is different from the more targeted one that we may develop after recovery from an infectious condition or a vaccine. This form of the immune system can work through various mechanisms, including inflammation and phagocytosis. Macrophages might be involved in phagocytosis to damage foreign invaders and debris. Macrophages occur in the spleen and help clean old cells and debris from the blood. Also, they might aid the T-lymphocytes in detecting foreign elements, which is also known as antigen presentation.
