When to Stop Hormone Replacement Therapy
There is no limit on hormone replacement therapy. However, the risk of side effects and complications may increase with longer treatment, higher doses, or when you age. Most people stop the treatment as soon as the symptoms of menopause improve, which may take several years. Those who take hormone replacement therapy for more than 12 months may have a higher risk of breast cancer. It is better to discuss with your healthcare provider to know exactly when to stop the treatment. There are two ways to stop hormone replacement therapy: gradually or suddenly. The former option is typically recommended as it would reduce the risk of menopausal symptoms returning back in the short term. [8]
