Food Poisoning While Breastfeeding: How to Handle It?

Risks to Breastfed Babies and Foods to Avoid

Scientists have proved that all the organisms causing food poisoning do not get into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding your baby during food poisoning is almost safe. Nevertheless, it is possible that your little one may get infected with the microorganisms that affect you from the food or drink sources. Whatever the case, you should keep breastfeeding your babies to protect them from being infected. In cases they have food poisoning as well, the milk would keep them properly nourished and hydrated. Some foods are more linked to poisoning than others because they contain some harmful germs. Raw foods, especially from animals, tend to cause the highest risk. It is important to avoid eating raw shellfish, unpasteurized milk, raw eggs, or undercooked or raw poultry and meat. Some veggies and fruits can be contaminated as well. Keep in mind that many other foods may get contaminated during cooking, processing, or in the field as well. [5]
