Eye Exams

Vision changes happen when people get older. Since many eye diseases develop silently and painlessly, senior adults seldom notice them until these diseases progress fairly advanced. Therefore, people should be particularly aware of age-related eye problems when reaching their 60s. Left untreated, these problems can lead to blindness or low vision.

According to the American Academy of the Ophthalmology, a complete eye exam should be conducted every year or two after age 65. Your ophthalmologist will have an eye dilation on you and check if you have conditions including:

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal detachment
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eyes
  • Presbyopia
  • Floaters and flashers [2]
